Funding Calls

The Transforming Construction Network Plus provides funding for research projects aiming to address some of the biggest problems currently facing the construction industry.

The small projects unite academics from different universities to synthesise and bring the best existing and new knowledge to the rest of the programme and maximise exposure across industry. The research supported focus on the gaps, inter-relationships and under-explored regions of this domain, spanning digital, energy, construction and manufacturing expertise, in line with the expectations of the Industrial Strategy Construction Sector Deal. 

Round 1: Funding call 

Funding was available for projects looking to address research questions derived from prior academic study or respond to industry need in the Transforming Construction Challenge’s core themes of:

  • designing and managing buildings through digitally-enabled performance management
  • constructing quality buildings through an offsite manufacturing approach
  • reducing energy demand by improving quality of build and powering buildings through embedded active technologies

The first round of funding calls for Small Projects awarded 4 projects: 

  • Challenging Space Frontiers in Hospitals
  • Developing consistent benchmarks to drive improved performance in construction projects
  • Digital Enablers for Construction Transformation (DECONT)
  • Putting people at the heart of future social housing design and manufacture.

Round 2: Funding call 

The second round of funding calls for Small Projects awarded 9 projects:

  • A Toolkit for Collaborative Construction: A Values-Centred Approach to AR and MMC for Housing
  • Design Optimisation and Prototyping for Affordable Rural Housing
  • Developing a Tool Kit for Knowledge Integration: Envisioning Buildings as Energy service
  • DigiConCo-Op: Transforming Micro-Project Delivery through Digital Co-Operative Construction
  • Digital-Twins in Construction: Towards an ontological Model Development and Integration Framework
  • Digitisation: opportunity or threat for Occupational Health and Safety and Wellbeing in Construction Industry
  • Transitioning to an automated construction supply chain: future business model innovation for SMEs
  • TransPark
  • Utilising Innovative Methods of Data Capture for Regulatory Compliance Checking
