    Innovate UK's Mike Biddle chaired a panel discussion which launched the Hydrogen Innovation Initiates (HII) latest report, ‘the UK Hydrogen Innovation Opportunity’. The report published by HII on the 24th of April combines key insights from over 250 businesses and 12 sector bodies. This comes at a key time in hydrogen innovation as the global hydrogen technology market has been predicted to reach £1trn annually by 2050.     👥 Digital Catapult’s support for Northern Ireland businesses During our visit to Northern Ireland, Indro Mukerjee, CEO of Innovate UK, Dean Cook, MBA, FRSB, Director of Place, and Dr Lisa Hazelden, CPO of Innovate UK, met William Revels and his team at the Digital Catapult in Belfast. The Digital Catapult is supporting innovative businesses across Northern Ireland’s vibrant economy and is an integral part of the local ecosystem. This was an opportunity to hear the latest on their brilliant work and talk strategically about how to support business innovation at the ‘cutting edge’ - from solid-state storage to digital twins.     👥 Partnering locally to drive Net Zero Dean Cook, MBA, FRSB, Director of Place and Levelling up at Innovate UK, attended the launch of the Key Cities Civic Partners in Net Zero report, a collection of peer-reviewed papers outlining innovation by universities working with member cities and local partners. In this report, Dean sets out his view on scalable Place innovation, how Innovate UK is helping Places reach Net Zero, and the importance of innovation clusters. Hosted by Key Cities APPG Co-Chair Rebecca Long-Bailey MP, the event was an opportunity for Member Cities, Universities, Parliamentarians and Stakeholders to strengthen collaboration across the network to ensure that local experience and priorities are reflected nationally. The Key Cities group is one of several place-focused mission groups Innovate UK will work with to engage the broadest range of actors and networks across all our great cities, towns and rural communities.     That’s a wrap: Day 1 of Innovate UK’s Materials Research Exchange (MRE 2024)   Today, our flagship materials innovation event, now in its 10th year, has welcomed researchers, business leaders, investors and stakeholders from the world of materials science to come together to address key challenges and explore the exciting new opportunities emerging from the sector.   Earlier in the day, we heard from Dr Lisa Hazelden, CPO of Innovate UK, who spoke about the need to “turn the plans of today into the innovative products of tomorrow” and said how investing in and developing critical technologies “will help make our society healthier, get our country to net zero and create our digital future.” Mike Biddle, Innovate UK’s Executive Director for Net Zero outlined Innovate UK’s vision for the UK to prosper from being the fastest transitioning economy to net zero. He spoke of the need to inspire and bring together businesses across supply chains and invest in the best ideas whilst making use of our human and natural capital.     🚀 Innovate UK's Materials Research Exchange provides an opportunity to strengthen the partnership between Royce, EPSRC and Innovate UK with additional activity over the next two years as part of our published strategy to exploit UK excellence for industry impact. Through our Henry Royce Institute for Advanced Materials Industrial Collaboration Programme we will provide further funding opportunities for exploring innovative ideas with a focus on technology translation.     Building the UK's offshore renewable energy capabilities. Colleagues from Innovate UK visited the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE Catapult) last week to learn more about their world-leading, test and validation facilities for offshore wind. ORE Catapult is at the forefront of the UK’s journey to net zero, supporting the development and growth of innovative technologies critical to meeting the UK government's ambitious 2050 targets for a sustainable future. Innovate UK’s Catapult Network is at the heart of the UK innovation ecosystem, providing a unique combination of world-class expertise and facilities, connecting research excellence to business impact.

    It was fantastic to welcome friends and colleagues from Innovate UK to our National Renewable Energy Centre in Blyth today! Great discussions focused on continued collaboration to drive ongoing innovation within the offshore renewable energy sector were had. We assessed our progress over the past 6 months towards a joint Northern Ireland Action Plan, focusing on: 🎯 Tailoring Innovate UK support to meet the unique needs of Northern Ireland's dynamic SME-driven economy. 🔍 Identifying opportunities to trial new approaches taking advantage of Northern Ireland's distinct innovation ecosystem. 🤝 Aligning our collective products and services to assist businesses in Northern Ireland at every stage of their innovation journey – from start-up to scale-up. 💼 Working together to unlock further private sector investment at every opportunity. We made new commitments to: 🔬 Concerted action on research commercialisation, engaging widely across the rest of UKRI and Northern Ireland’s Universities and Further Educational Colleges. 📊 Senior-level workgroup meetings to super-charge Northern Ireland business access to our Catapult network. 🚀 Launch a joint Action Plan for Northern Ireland in the Autumn. These commitments will support the Northern Ireland Executive’s objectives to boost productivity, support NI’s sub-regional agenda, deliver good jobs and decarbonise the economy.
